LCG Activities - Past

Some of the major contributions (past) of C-DAC Mumbai in Language Technology are:

  1. Device independent text processing tools - DIP.
  2. Rupantar encoding scheme - which has become almost the de facto standard for writing Indian languages using English alphabets among research communities. Rupantar Programs addresses the issue of transliteration from English into many Indian languages and has been used as a support in many subsequent text generation environments.
  3. Vinyas - Font Design Software.
  4. Vividha - Multilingual Text Processor
  5. Vidura - Electronic Publishing System.
  6. Collaborative work with Microsoft to enable Indian Languages on Window 2000 Platform.
  7. Creation of opentype font series `Raghu' for Indian Languages on Linux Platform.

LCG Activities - Present

Ongoing projects:

IndiX2

The basic IndiX2 agenda is that the text processing should be as easy for the Indian scripts as it is for English for the user. Under IndiX2 project suitable components within the GNU/Linux Graphical User Interface System are enabled so that users can create, edit, view and print contents in 12 major Indian languages just as they do with English. IndiX approach is to enable Indian languages at core level so that most of the internationalised applications are enabled for all 12 Indian languages without even recompiling. The solution is generic and can be extended to other languages with complex script.

janabhaaratii:

The objective of this project is to enable wide use of Indian Language Computing through Free/Open Source systems and applications localised in Indian languages.

The project aims at inviting, building and supporting community initiative to produce and disseminate free/open source software systems, applications and contents to help proliferate wide-spread use of Information Technology in our society.

IndiX2 and janabhaaratii, both these projects are funded by Technology Development for Indian Languages, Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Government of India.
