Intelligent Advisory System for Farmers
Project Overview:
The project aims to design and implement an intelligent advisory system which will act as a knowledge repository for major crops produced in the north eastern states of India. This system will benefit the farmers of the north eastern region as well agriculture students.
The duration of this project is for three years.
Project Funding : DIT
Project Description:
IAS is a hybrid expert system which incorporates potentials of Rule Based Reasoning and Case Based reasoning, which are majorly two techniques used in expert systems. The integration of these two techniques will provide a powerful system which can be used for complex decision making process. The system can be used for answering queries related to farming activities carried out in Northeast states of India such that
- The system will provide help to agricultural experts on complex decision making process in farming related problems and provides advice and help to farmers to solve problems related to their farming activities. Otherwise, they need to contact agricultural experts
- The system can be used as an instructional material in educational programs and students can use it for practical experience with real scenario.
IAS can also be considered as a knowledge repository for five crops (Rice, Potato, Mustard, Cabbage, and Maize) which are majorly produced in the north eastern regions of India.
Why IAS:
Rice is the most important food crop in North-East region of India. However, the rice production in this region is still below the all India average rice productivity. This could be attributed to traditional cultivation methods that might not always result in good yield, unavailability of experts (who can help farmers to take advantages of technological advances) and non-optimum utilization of tools and techniques.
On the other side, faming activities in a farming process is a complex problem involving imprecision, uncertainty and vagueness. The approached system will provide better solution to queries related to farming activities carried out in Northeast states of India.
Expected Outcome
- IAS as a knowledge repository for five major crops(Rice, Potato, Mustard, Cabbage, and Maize)
- IAS as an instructional material in educational programs
- IAS as educational tool which can be used by students for practical experience with real scenario.
- Research papers
Current Status:
The KBCS division of C-DAC Mumbai has already developed Vidur and Vidwan systems which are the two base systems for the IAS project. Vidur is an intelligent advisory system can be used for answering queries related to three farming activities, Paddy Variety Selection, Weed Control, and Pest Control and Vidwan is an expert system shell which allows creation of rule based expert systems, by encoding expert's knowledge as a set of rules.
Some institutions including CAU, Imphal; Directorate of Agriculture, Manipur; Directorate of Agriculture, Meghalaya have expressed their interest for the project.
